A single firework goes off somewhere in the distance. It’s not a burst from a leftover box. It’s not a stray mortar. It’s a clean spherical flash with no smoke trail and no visible launch point.

Police logs in Massachusetts, Maine, and Connecticut document these calls. The pattern is consistent.

The flash appears between midnight and two in the morning. It’s always described as white or pale gold, and witnesses say it looks like a professional aerial shell but smaller and strangely quiet. Some describe hearing a soft thump instead of a full detonation.

Fire departments have investigated several of these incidents. They find no debris, no cardboard fragments, no lift charge residue, and no scorch marks on pavement or grass. There’s nothing that would indicate a physical device.

Meteorologists have ruled out heat lightning in cases where the sky was clear. The FAA has confirmed no aircraft in the area during several of the documented events. In one case in 1998, a state trooper in western Massachusetts reported seeing the flash from a ridge and noted that it illuminated the tree line evenly, as if the light source were suspended in place rather than exploding outward.

The phenomenon has no official explanation. It appears most often between July 1 and July 5. It’s never been photographed clearly. The flash is too brief and too isolated, but the reports continue every year.
