In the winter of 1850, a schooner named the Sarah was anchored off the coast of Owl’s Head, Maine. The wind was cruel, the waves were rising, and the lighthouse keeper had already lit the lantern twice that day, once for visibility, and once for luck.

On board were three souls: a seaman named Roger Elliott, and two passengers, Lydia Dyer and Richard Ingraham, who were engaged to be married. They were young, hopeful, and probably regretting every decision that had led them to spend December on a boat in Penobscot Bay.

Then the storm hit.
